CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Students from Webster Elementary school on Chicago’s West Side took part in a peace march Wednesday.
Chanting, “we want peace in the streets,” more than 100 students marched through North Lawndale, a neighborhood where most are touched in some way by violence.
"Adults sometimes don't want to listen to just adults," explained fifth grader Kennashay Pilgian.
"Seeing children also participate and show that they care or show that they want peace, I feel that adults might actually open their eyes, open their minds-ne open-minded and listen to what children have to say."
Hailee Weeks is an 8th grader and part of the school's Anti-Violence Youth Committee.
"We shouldn't be losing our lives to as something as simple as a conflict. We can learn that we can deal with it by words-not always by violence...not always by guns," she said.
"I think we should put down the guns."
These students lost a classmate to violence last year.
"It really hurt when he died. I just don't like this," said fifth grader Semaj Williams." Everybody should know gun in hands don't solve anything. You have to talk."
