Students call for cease-fire in Gaza ahead of City Council resolution vote

(WBBM NEWSRADIO) – Hundreds of students from Chicago Public Schools staged a brief sit-in at City Hall on Tuesday and called for a cease-fire in Gaza.

The demonstration came as City Council members were expected to consider a cease-fire resolution on Wednesday tied to the continuing Israel-Hamas war.

During Tuesday’s action, some students walked out of classes and staged a rally outside City Hall and at temporarily blocked traffic on LaSalle Street. Chicago police stymied attempts by students to reach the ground-floor elevator bank for city offices.

CPS officials said they were aware of the planned demonstrations and urged participants to be respectful toward others.

“We are a District that is committed to student voice and student participation in civic life and democracy, but harassment, discrimination, and bias-based harm have no place in our school communities,” officials said in a prepared statement.
