(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Students in the Chicago area say they're worried after the Supreme Court killed President Biden's loan-forgiveness plan.
Biden announced the $400 billion plan last year, and it gave hope millions of Americans, including Ashley Choi.
"I think we were all looking forward to it as a potential relief plan for us, and then when it didn't happen it just felt kind of disheartening to hear,” Choi said Friday.
She and her friends Kayla Homsey and Neera Kadiyala are in their last year of pharmacy school at the University of Illinois Chicago. They say they’ve each racked up at least $200,000 in student loans.
“I get nervous. If I don't get a job after school, am I going to be able to pay for this? It’s very nerve-wracking," Homsey said.
They say they hope Biden can find another way to help ease student loan debt, as he promised Friday. The Biden administration has said 40 million Americans would have benefited from the loan-forgiveness program.
Senior at DePaul University Julianne Silva estimates she owes $14,000 in student loans, which she considers manageable. Still, she said she’s disappointed.
"I was going to get a fair amount of my debt relieved,” she said.
