(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — There are renewed calls to force the state of Illinois to sell the site of its former-mental health center in Tinley Park, as problems at the property continue to mount.

The latest issue, according to Tinley Park's mayor, is a leak in a water main on the property at 183rd and Harlem. It reportedly has spilled more than 2 million gallons of water into the sewer system and threatens to contaminate nearby wells.

The village issued several citations for other problems at the facility, including asbestos contamination, but the state claims it's exempt.

State Rep. Tim Ozinga, whose district is across the street the facility, has introduced a bill that would force the state to sell the site to Tinley Park for fair market value.

“It’s more important now than ever, as there continues to be serious issues with this property, that we move forward and find a solution that’s a win-win for both the village and the state,” he said.

There was a deal for Tinley Park to buy the property, but Ozinga said the Pritzker Administration said in 2019 it wasn't ready to sell the facility.
