(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Two suburban Congress members agree the rising number of COVID-19 cases across the U.S. is a matter of concern.

Lauren Underwood of the 14th District and Bill Foster of the 11th District in Joliet attended the opening of VNA Health Care's latest clinic in the area.

Congresswoman Underwood acknowledged she's watching the apparent return of COVID with interest.

"Without a doubt, we are seeing a rise in COVID cases across the country," she said. "The data has been very clear whether it's hospitalizations or the waste water reports that's coming from the state department of public health."

Underwood, a registered nurse, said there are enough new cases of COVID that people who are at a higher risk should think about precautions like masking, frequent testing and if they feel sick, test to be sure.

Congressman Foster, a scientist, knows some people will wince when they hear the words masks and vaccines, but he said the vaccines have proven effective and remain the best defense.

"It doesn't stop COVID in its tracks, but it makes COVID when it hits much milder and that's why it has saved countless lives."

Neither Congress member is pushing the panic button, but they are paying close attention.
