(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — The 2024 general election is less than one month away, and early voting will begin Wednesday for suburban Cook County voters at several locations.
Starting Wednesday, early voting will take place in courthouses in Rolling Meadows, Skokie, Maywood, Bridgeview, Markham, and downtown Chicago at 69 W. Washington Blvd.
Ed Michalowski, the Cook County deputy clerk of elections, said early voting will expand to even more locations later this month.
"Prior to Election Day, we also vote at 130 nursing homes throughout Cook County, and that's like a township or a ward all in itself," he said. "We do that by mail ballot in advance, so we prepare mail ballots for all the residents of those nursing homes, and they're able to vote in-person, with election judges supervising the process."
He added that in-person voting will take place over two weekends at the Cook County Jail.
This year, the county will also offer a new process for voters this year that will allow voters to update their signatures while they're at voting locations, if they so please.
"Over time, everything changes, especially our signatures," Michalowski said. "When it comes [time] for petition review — when the candidates try to get on the ballot — it's so frustrating for people that they have people sign, and their signatures change so drastically over time that it's not updated and accurate. We wanted the voters and the candidates to all have the technology that we leverage [to] work for them."
Early voting is already underway in Chicago and the collar counties.
