(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — A legendary and historic golf course in the southwest suburbs will close this weekend, after being open for nearly 100 years.
Gleneagles Country Club in Lemont was built in 1924 and was one of the handful of Chicago-area golf courses to host PGA tournaments, the Chicago Open in 1958 and 1959.
Among the golf legends who played at Gleneagles were Sam Sneed and Gary Player.
Casey Richards of the Chicago District Golf Association said Gleneagles wasn't just a course for elite golfers, but for players of all levels.
A developer bought the 232 acres at Gleneagles to build upscale homes.
Saturday is the last day of public golf at Gleneagles. On Sunday, it will host a special event to thank the staff and to say goodbye.
