NORTH CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - An investigation is underway after a suspect was found dead in a North Chicago Police Department jail cell, the Lake County Sheriff’s Office said.

The 34-year-old man was discovered deceased by a North Chicago police officer on Saturday, at 5:30 a.m., according to a Lake County Sheriff’s spokesman.

The suspect was apprehended by North Chicago police Friday night, at around 10:00 p.m., after a warrant had been issued for his arrest, alleging he broke into a car. During his arrest, officers found a controlled substance on the man, and, after he was brought to the police station, the man complained of feeling ill, authorities said. He was subsequently transported to a local hospital.

A few hours later, the man returned to the North Chicago police station, the Lake County Sheriff said. It was only during a well-being check by an officer that the suspect was found to have died.

A Lake County Sheriff’s spokesman said the initial investigation revealed that the suspect suffered severe blood loss from a removed dialysis port.

An autopsy will be conducted by the Lake County Coroner’s Office and the Lake County Major Crime Task Force will spearhead an independent investigation.
