ORLAND PARK (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - A teenager whose violent arrest in Oak Lawn in 2022 led to accusations of police abuse is now accused by police in another suburb of taking part in a brutal attack last month at a gym.
In July 2022, Oak Lawn police claimed Hadi Abuatelah of Bridgeview, who was 17 at the time, was carrying a loaded gun in a bag when he ran from officers following a traffic stop.
A video showed an officer repeatedly punching the teen after he was on the ground.
Prosecutors charged Abuatelah with illegal gun possession. A grand jury later indicted Officer Patrick O'Donnell on charges of aggravated battery and official misconduct.
The teen's family also filed a federal civil rights lawsuit.
Now, Orland Park police claim Abuatelah, who is now 19, and two other teenagers severely beat and kicked another teen they knew during an altercation last month at the Life Time Fitness near 163rd and LaGrange.
Police say both Abuatelah and 19-year-old Sami Hirmiz of Oak Lawn were arrested.
Investigators said 18-year-old Nooh Masoud of Hickory Hills could not be found, and an arrest warrant was issued for him.
