EVANSTON (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - The Northwestern football team is closer to having a home field during the university’s rebuilding of Ryan Field.
Evanston has approved Northwestern’s initial application to use Martin Stadium to host home football games.
The lakefront field currently hosts the university’s soccer and women’s lacrosse games. It’s not clear if all of the Wildcats' six home games for the upcoming football season would be played there.
The Chicago Tribune reported the city still must sign off on an event operations plan and make sure temporary or permanent changes meet zoning and building code requirements. Additionally, the city did not approve a video board at the lakefront stadium and required that press boxes must be attached to seating for spectators.
Construction on Ryan Field is expected to be done in 2026.
