CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — The fashionista musical adaptation of “The Devil Wears Prada” will make its world premiere run in Chicago Tuesday night.
The 2006 movie is getting a musical makeover, thanks in part to the legendary Elton John, who wrote more than 20 songs for the Broadway-bound show.
“The subject matter of the film screams out for music,” John said. “I just thought you have to have characters you can write for, and you have to have a backdrop to inspire you musically — and the film does.”
“The Devil Wears Prada,” directed by former Steppenwolf Artistic Director Anna Shapiro, will have a five-week stay in Chicago.
John said he took inspiration from fashion shows as they composed the musical’s songs.
“What we’ve written … is a very modern song,” John said. “I’ve been to enough fashion shows in my life to know that it’s the excitement when you see something new, you see something great, and you’re there and you can feel the excitement in the crowd. It’s like going to a rock concert,” he said.
In addition to John and Shapiro, the musical’s creative team also featured singer-songwriter Shaina Taub.
Tony Award winner Beth Leavel will star as Miranda Priestly, who was portrayed by Meryl Streep in the 2006 movie adaptation of Lauren Weisberger’s best-selling 2003 novel.
The cast also includes Taylor Iman Jones as Andy Sachs, Javier Munoz as Nigel Owens, and Emily Masaka Haley as Emily Charlton.
The production will run at the Nederlander Theatre from July 19 to Aug. 21.
