(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — While Mother's Day is a celebration for many, local therapists are speaking up about how that might not always be the reality for some people.

“If they have lost their mother, it can be a difficult … day for them as a memory of the person that they lost,” said Dr. Christina Geiselhart. “Another reason that it could be difficult is if they did not have a good relationship with their mother, or if there's some difficulty as far as, maybe, from their childhood or even currently going on.”

Geiselhart, a licensed clinical social worker at Thriveworks in Hoffman Estates, said fostering open communication can be a good way to support those struggling this weekend.

“I think really just talking to the individual and asking what would be helpful, what would they like to do, rather than forcing them,” she said. “Or thinking even simple gestures, like bringing over something for them to eat that day, or sending them a funny meme in the morning, something to just help them, let them know that you're thinking about them, and you're there for them.”

For those who may be struggling, Geiselhart said it’s a good idea to plan ahead about how you may want to approach the day.

“Thinking about what extent you're going to go to express your love for your mother, or your involvement with your mother,” she said. “Recognition of your mother — that is on you, and how you feel comfortable, not about their expectations.”

Geiselhart also recommended avoiding isolation and instead spending time connected to reality.

“It could be something like watching a show that you enjoy or going and sitting outside at a park and really paying attention to the wildlife right now,” she said. “Doing something that is for you to feel connected and grounded, where you can help work through some of those emotions.”
