CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — The Northwest Suburban League of Women Voters has asked the village of Mount Prospect to stop using the "Thin Blue Line" patch that adorns their police department's uniforms.
Heidi Graham, president of the Northwest Suburban League of Women Voters, said no one's denigrating the Mount Prospect police but their patch depicting the so-called “Thin Blue Line” makes some residents, especially those who are African American, uncomfortable and some white supremacist groups are using the symbol.
"What is happening here is that our community members are telling the police, 'Yes, we get it. That's not what the original intent of this symbol was. But it is what it means to us," Graham told WBBM Newsradio.
The original intent was to honor police officers killed in the line of duty.
Graham said there'll be a community march and rally tomorrow ahead of the Mount Prospect village board meeting. She said she expects a counter demonstration.
