CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- The weather was perfect for a parade Saturday and thousands lined the streets on the near southwest side for the Pilsen Mexican Independence Day Parade.
Gavin Fria lives on 18th Street and did not know the parade was Saturday, but was still loving it.
"It's awesome to see everybody out here," he said. "We just moved into the area, so it's really cool to be here and be a part of something like this."
Classic cars, including several VW Beetles, were part of the parade, as were beauty queens, Mariachi bands, marching bands, and men on horseback.
Lorraine Luna also had a front row seat on 18th street. "It's beautiful I love it," she said. "It's my favorite time of the year."
Luna also said seeing children participating in the parade dressed in traditional Mexican costumes brought back memories from her recent trip to Mexico City.
Mexican Independence Day is September 16 and celebrations are expected to continue in Chicago all week long.
