CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- 20 years ago today, disaster struck at a Near South Side night club leaving nearly two dozen people dead.
Twenty-one people died in the E2 nightclub on 23rd and Michigan after security guards trying to break up a fight used pepper spray causing a stampede for the exit. People were trampled and crushed at the front door which opened inward. Shapara Hicks was six-years old at the time. Her mother LaToya McGraw was among those killed.
"You can try to do better and change laws and, you know, make new rules but are they going to follow them? Will the rules matter? And will this happen again to someone else’s mom," she told CBS 2.
The owner of the club and his silent partner were eventually convicted of violating a judge’s order regarding building code violations, but their convictions were thrown out on appeal.
