With playoff baseball returning to Chicago’s South Side tomorrow, there’s no shortage of excitement among fans…and that includes a former White Sox slugger.
He’s worn the uniform, and now, Ron Kittle is just enjoying the ride.
“They go out there and they want to boost everybody up, and the city picked up on it. They already forgot about all those 100 loss seasons. When you’re successful in Chicago, they like the new stuff, the city supports it and I’m excited for the White Sox.”
The 1983 AL Rookie of the Year says that excitement has extended beyond the diamond.
“As an ambassador, I get to see the fans. They’re buying more souvenirs, they’re buying more Sox clothes. It’s just a great year for the White Sox and for Jerry Reinsdorf.”
And, Kittle says, for the entire city of Chicago.
“The Northside had a great season this year, they didn’t take it far, but you’ve got to root for our Chicago teams. All my friends are asking me for tickets. I say ‘hey, you work. Go buy your own tickets. I’m not giving you free stuff.’”
We also asked the former All-Star if these Sox can bring home a World Series title.
“On a piece of paper, absolutely not. But a piece of paper has never hit a baseball or threw a slider on the black.”
