Trash chute fire displaces residents of South Side high-rise: CFD

CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - A fire in a high-rise in Woodlawn Sunday night forced the evacuation of many residents, but no one was injured.

The Chicago Fire Department said the fire appears to have started in a garbage chute, sending smoke throughout several floors of the 22-story building at 64th and Stony Island.

Multiple residents of the Island Terrace apartments called 911 about smoke at around 8:15. Crews had put out the fire in about 35 minutes.

Paramedics evaluated four people at the scene but all declined to go to the hospital. The department requested CTA warming buses for residents while they cleared out the smoke.
