CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Registered nurses at University of Chicago Medicine have called off a planned strike.

The 2,800 U of C nurses, represented by National Nurses United, had threatened to walk off the job on Thursday.

Now, they’ve announced a tentative agreement on a new contract.
Bargaining team member Stephanie Gamboa said in a statement from the union, “Our decision to call a strike forced management to address a number of our outstanding demands at the bargaining table.”

She went on to say they look forward to ratifying a new contract that “will improve working conditions for nurses and health care for our patients.”

Staffing and work rules were among the issues. The nurses will vote on ratifying their new contract on March 12 and 13.
