HIGHLAND PARK (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Members of the Highland Park community received special honors Monday night for their heroism during the Fourth of July parade shooting this summer.
“While we’re haunted by the mass shooting, each day we work toward recovery,” Highland Park Mayor Nancy Rotering said.
Rotering spoke during a special city council meeting held 10 weeks after seven people were shot and killed and dozens of others wounded as their town’s parade was violently interrupted.
During the meeting, United States Congressman Brad Schneider, who represents Illinois’ 10th District, personally handed each person a Congressional Certificate of Recognition, a folded American flag and his sincerest gratitude to Highland Park first responders and the mayor.
The packed city hall and overflow room gave a standing ovation following the presentation, as Schneider described the heroism of Highland Park residents and public servants.
Schneider highlighted the firefighters, who he said were looking one way toward their families in the parade while running the other way toward gunfire and wounded residents.
“I can’t imagine a more difficult challenge in the daily efforts of our jobs,” Schneider said.
With that, the heroes who emerged on the Fourth of July in Highland Park were officially recognized by the United States Congress.
