(WBBM NEWSRADIO) – The union representing 1,500 faculty members at University of Illinois at Chicago said its strike will continue Thursday because negotiations are at an impasse with the administration.
UIC United Faculty began picketing Tuesday in hopes of getting a new contract for the labor agreement that expired last summer.
“I think it is clear that the faculty and students are together and standing strong,” English professor Anna Kornbluh, a member of the union bargaining committee, said in a news release Wednesday. “It is equally clear that the UIC management team is working in a leadership vacuum.”
The next bargaining session hasn’t been scheduled, the union said. Among its demands are higher minimum levels of compensation for the lowest paid faculty and mental health resources for students, which labor officials say will take some responsibility off of faculty.
UIC administrators say they are disappointed faculty walked out. Some classes are being taught by teaching assistants.
