CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — The inaugural Legends of Basketball Showcase will give Chicago college basketball fans a look at some different teams this weekend, as well as some of the legends associated with their schools.
“It’s a college quadruple-header here in the city at the United Center,” said Scott Rochelle, President and CEO of the National Basketball Retired Players Association (NBRPA). “It’s the first of our regular season college games. It’s surreal.”
While no Chicago schools are taking part, fans can get an up close and personal look at Northern Iowa, Dayton and NC State men’s basketball, among others competing Saturday.
“Some of these are smaller schools that don’t have the opportunity to play in these large-scale stadiums,” Rochelle said. “[The] United Center, not just being a historic place, is one of the largest stadiums in the country.”
Along with college hoops action, Rochelle said the NBRPA event will show fans from out of town what Chicago has to offer during the holidays, as well as connect some players to former stars.
“Giving back, showing the ropes, having conversations about what it took to get to the level of professional basketball,”Rochelle said. “Also just reflecting on what it means to be part of a team and part of the game of basketball.”
