CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Chicago’s public health commissioner says there have been more cases of COVID infections among vaccinated people, but that it’s not cause for concern.
Chicago Public Health Commissioner Allison Arwady said the unvaccinated are the ones mostly ending up with serious health concerns from COVID.
"Our hospital surge, make no doubt about it, is being driven by unvaccinated Chicagoans," she said.
Arwady said that while there are more so-called “breakthrough” cases of COVID in Chicago, the good news is that vaccines are keeping most of those cases on the milder side.
"I am very reassured, as I hope you are, that this safe, effective and widely-available vaccine continues to perform as well as it is."
However, Arwady does not want to tax Chicago hospitals any more than they already are.
"Chances right now are very good that, if you have flu-like symptoms, you have COVID," she said. "I do not want people going to the emergency department unless they are in need of emergency medical care."
