(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Anywhere from about 384,000 to 700,000 Illinois residents are expected to lose their Medicaid health coverage over 2023.

Before COVID-19, Illinois residents on Medicaid had to renew their coverage each year, but, when the pandemic began, the federal government wanted to be certain as many people as possible had health coverage.

It began giving states extra money in exchange for the promise not to kick anyone off Medicaid. But now, federal lawmakers have decided continuous enrollment in Medicaid was no longer needed, and they passed a new bill ending that provision come the end of March.

The Tribune reported some of those people will gain coverage elsewhere, but others will find themselves uninsured.

The earliest some may start losing coverage through Medicaid is this July.
