(WBBM NEWSRADIO) – Former water commissioner Mariyana Spyropoulos prevailed Tuesday over incumbent Iris Martinez in the Democratic primary for Cook County Circuit Court Clerk.

It was considered one of the few genuine Election Night upsets, although Spyropoulos did have backing from Democratic Party officials.

With 81 percent of the vote counted late Tuesday, Spyropoulos led with a margin of more than 135,000 votes, or nearly 65 percent to Martinez’s 35.1 percent of votes cast.

The circuit clerk’s office oversees court records.
