WAUKEGAN, Ill. (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- When you think of farms, you probably picture fields of crops and a big red barn, but College of Lake County has a different idea.

The North Side school is moving forward with plans to construct an Urban Farm Center at its Lakeshore campus.

The nearly 24,000-square-foot facility will be at the corner of North Sheridan Road and West Madison Street in Waukegan.

CLC said the development is part of a vision to promote modern agricultural techniques and provide a diverse, year-round supply of locally grown food.

The Urban Farm Center will also facilitate training in hydroponic growing and greenhouse production for both students and community members.

College of Lake County plans on raising $15 million in private funding for the construction.
