(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Cook County has awarded $5 million in federal COVID stimulus funds to organizations that are helping the growing number of people experiencing domestic violence since the start of the pandemic.
Cook County Commissioner Alma Anaya said the issue of domestic violence is personal for her, as the daughter of a survivor.
"I never really understood how many other women and how many other individuals find themselves in the same situation," Anaya said. "Many with the exact same barriers that prevented my mom from getting help."
Also in attendance: Kristina Kaupa, policy director at the Justice Advisory Council, which helped identify nearly two dozen organizations that staff a domestic violence hotline, provide counseling and emergency housing.
"Funding also supports counseling for those who have caused harm," Kaupa said. "Engaging these individuals is critical to breaking those cycles of harm."
The grants range from $132,000 to $1.5 million for services through September 2025
