(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Veterans groups will be out in the coming days collecting money to help needy veterans and giving poppies to donors.

Money collected during Poppy Days is used for everything from helping needy veterans pay car repair bills to helping residents of the LaSalle Veterans Home, where 36 residents died of COVID-19, said Jay Davis, senior vice commander of VFW District 19 in the Kane County area.

Proceeds helped the VFW install smart TVs for the veterans at the home.

Other funds have gone to help a Marine whose chid was born with disabilities and needs care in Madison, Wisconsin, he said. Donations help pay gas money, for food and for hotel stays.

Davis said he tells people who join the VFW that it’s some of the most rewarding work that they'll ever do.

Members of his VFW District will be collecting donations outside the Woodman’s Market in North Aurora from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.
