Police body camera footage shows heroic rescue after family accidentally drives into Naperville pond

NAPERVILLE, Ill. (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Naperville police has released body camera video from an incident last week in which an SUV drove into a retention pond and officers rescued a couple and their toddler.

The video starts with officers running along the bank of the pond with a white SUV visible in the background, about 30 feet off shore, submerged nearly up to the windows.

Three officers wade into the frigid water. They break out the rear window to get to the toddler. Meanwhile, water fills the SUV.

A woman is heard saying “my baby.” Everyone was okay. Police said in a statement that the pond was frigid and that the officers' "ability to remain calm and do what needed to be done to help the frantic family is commendable."

“I expect nothing less from any of our officers,” Naperville police Cmdr. Rick Krakow told the Daily Herald. “Hearing about it is one thing, but then when you see the video, it just puts it into perspective how amazing the work was.”

Police believe the driver accidentally hit the gas instead of the brake, according to an initial investigation last week.
