WHEATON (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - Funeral services have been set for an Iraq War veteran from Wheaton.

A visitation for Army Sgt. Joel Gomez will be held at Hultgren Funeral Home in Wheaton today from 4 to 8 p.m. The gathering includes a prayer service at 6 p.m.

The 42-year-old, whose story inspired his hometown to rally behind him, died last week due to complications from injuries he suffered during the Iraq War.

In 2004, Gomez and his unit were chasing the enemy when their vehicle plunged off a cliff, rendering him a quadriplegic.

The Daily Herald reported the Wheaton Warrenville High School alum will be laid to rest with military honors on Tuesday at the Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery.
