NORRIDGE (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — It was a beautiful, but solemn day as mourners gathered at Cumberland Chapel in Norridge to remember Chicago Fire Lt. Jan Tchoryk, who was killed while fighting a fire on North DuSable Lake Shore Drive. He was 55 years old.

Those who came out included fellow first responders, elected officials and members of the community, including Susan Bierut, who fought back tears as she stood across the street from the chapel.

“I’m here to pay my respects,” she said. “It’s really sad. Last two weeks, two firemen have passed away … and with police officers being killed, it’s just sad.”

Another one of those paying tribute was Timothy Nelson of Wisconsin.

“I’m here for Lt. Tchoryk, his family, and all the men and women that wear the uniform,” Nelson said.

Nelson, who donned patches and a hat that honored firefighters and first responders, stood across the street from the funeral home, where he held an American flag.

“It’s my way of saying, ‘Thank you,’” Nelson said. “Unfortunately, this is the 28th funeral I’ve been to in the last five years.”

Some driving past the funeral offered a simple salute.
