CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- A new study from the Chicago-based Environmental Law and Policy Center identified a Waukegan coal plant as a potential flooding and contamination risk.
The environmental study said pollutants near the recently closed facility are a threat to Lake Michigan.
This comes months after state legislation, which would have required the removal of pollutants, stalled in the Illinois House of Representatives.
Midwest Generation closed its Waukegan plant's coal-fired units, but two coal ash ponds — pools of toxins — remain there.
The study claimed neighborhoods in Illinois, Wisconsin, Indiana, and Michigan would be drastically affected by water encroaching onto industrial sites.
The six Illinois locations outlined in the study include multiple Waukegan sites and Zion's retired nuclear plant.
