WAUKEGAN (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — A big renovation is coming for Bevier Park in Waukegan.
Gov. J.B. Pritzker announced Friday that Illinois has awarded the Waukegan Park District $400,000 to help transform Bevier Park. The proposed renovation would add a new nature-themed playground, a discovery dock, and a sand beach with a kayak and canoe launch.
The proposal also includes installing new bleachers and dugouts at the park’s baseball fields; resurfacing the basketball courts; and updating Bevier Park’s disc golf course.
Pritzker said the state grants — administered by the Illinois Department of Natural Resources — are designed to create jobs and improve parks and quality of life.
Bevier Park, which spans more than 30 acres, is almost 50 years old. In addition to the amenities mentioned above, it also includes a nature classroom and a pond where the Waukegan Park District holds its annual fishing derby.
The park was named after Bevier Butts, who served as Waukegan’s Director of the Recreation Department.
Funding for the Bevier Park renovations came from Illinois’ Open Space Land Acquisition and Development grant.
