(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- 2023 was the third-warmest year on record for the Chicago area, according to the National Weather Service.
The temperatures were three degrees above normal but may not be what people remember most about last year’s weather.
The Chicago area ended the year about four inches shy of the normal amount of rain. National Weather Service senior meteorologist Brett Borchardt said two flash floods left parts of suburban Cook County water-logged.
“Parts of the Chicago area certainly finished with well above normal rain,” he said.
He blames climate change for more intense storms that led to the flash flooding. Other notable weather events last year include the first 100-degree temperature reading since 2012.
2023 also had the most tornadoes for the area, with 58 recorded.
It was the first time we had them in January, February and March.
