CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — The Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) said weekday ridership topped 900,000 in September for the first time since the pandemic began.

In January 2022, there were 540,000 rides given during weekdays and nearly 14.5 million for the entire month, the CTA said.

This month, the CTA said weekday ridership averaged more than 900,000 riders, paced by increased ridership on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays.

The CTA said increases have been seen in office workers and students riding the buses and rails.

Weekday downtown ridership jumped to more than 100,000 average weekday riders — up from 38,000 in January 2021.

Specifically, ridership on CTA buses is up 8% since 2021 while ridership increased 13% on trains.

So far in the month of September, the CTA has provided over 22 million rides.
