CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Prom season will get a lot easier for a group of high school students Saturday, courtesy of a West Side beauty shop.

It’s the first annual Prom Giveaway at Beauty’s Unique Beauty Bar in Austin.

“What we’re doing is giving away prom attire for our less fortunate kids,” she said. “We have teamed up with several local non-profit organizations and also businesses," said co-owner Karla Brown.

Brown said that will help provide over a dozen students with prom essentials, and a few with hair and makeup services.

She co-owns the shop with her daughter, a big inspiration for the giveaway.

“The reason why it’s so personal for us is, because I am rehabilitated, so at her prom, she didn’t have these privileges because I was away," Brown explained.

"I feel that she knows firsthand the struggles of not having everything she needed, but still persevering.”

And while some less fortunate students didn’t make the cut, Brown is hopeful this giveaway won’t be the last.

“I pray that it grows next year and the following year.”
