CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- At a meeting Tuesday night, west side residents pushed back against a plan to use a park district fieldhouse in Galewood to house migrants.
The meeting at Amundsen Park- where the city plans to put more than 200 migrants, started with chants of "you work for us and what about the kids" before 29th Ward Alderman Chris Taliaferro shared his objections including that he was virtually given no notice and was informed last Friday that there are plans to have a migrant shelter at the location.
Amundsen Park Advisory Council member Donald Glover said the city should use vacant office buildings in the Loop instead for migrants.
"All the office buildings-nobody wants to be in the Loop anymore. They all want to move west, because of new buildings with better amenities," he explained. "Those buildings are empty right now."
Many complained their community groups paid for repairs to the fieldhouse - not the park district.
One woman yelled: "You are selling us out."
