Do you want the best bulbs for fall planting? Well, now is the time to order them. On this week's episode of the Gardening Tips podcast, the Chicago Botanic Garden's Jacob Burns talks about what flower bulbs to order now.

Ball growers have mailed their catalogs and begun taking orders online. If you are looking for something unique to plant this fall, you'll want to order now, before these vendors sell out. Some of the best bulbs for early spring flowers are crocus, cyclamen, snowdrops, reticulated iris, and winter aconite. Look for Crocus thomasinianus, a species less desired by rodents.

Tulips are favored by deer, so if they frequent your garden, use daffodils or hyacinths as an alternative. In damp areas where most bulbs will rot, try growing camas, checker lily, or summer snowflake. And finally, for late spring color, plant the globular flowers of alliums with the spiky blooms of foxtail lilies.
