CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Chicago White Sox players had a special surprise for fans in the Loop Wednesday morning.

Ahead of the team’s home opener, which takes place Thursday, White Sox outfielders Andrew Benintendi and Gavin Sheets surprised fans in the Loop with a ballpark classic: hot dogs.

“Just seeing some people, giving some hot dogs, getting the vibe of the ballpark back and having some fun out here … who doesn't want a hot dog at 10 a.m.?” said Sheets.

For 9-year-old Raymond, from Wisconsin, the free hot dogs were a welcomed surprise.

“Someone says ‘free hot dogs,’ and I'm like, ‘Yeah, hot dogs!’ and it's really cool because you get to know who these players are,” he said. “I'm gonna eat it, and I know it's gonna be awesome and tasty.”

For Tony, a Chicagoan and long-time Sox fan, it was a great way to start off the work day.

“It's been a nice surprise, especially since it cooled down compared to the last few days; it sort of warms you up a little bit,” he said.

Parking lots at Guaranteed Rate Field open three hours before the first pitch. Gates open two hours before.

Fans are encouraged to arrive early, and are reminded that backpacks and large bags are not allowed inside.
