(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- A hiring expert says now is the time for teenagers to find and land that summer job.
Rick Cobb, founder of the workplace consulting firm 2 Discern in Chicago tells the Noon Business Hour that teenagers need ask themselves why they want a summer job before their search.
He said it's usually three reasons: making extra money, getting experience, and building a network, which is "a great way to get a head start" in finding out about other future opportunities.
Teens are in demand this summer to work at fast food restaurants, ice cream stands, camp counselors, and lifeguards.
"The labor market for teens is still hot," Cobb said. "The tech experience that teens have now is transferrable immediately. The opportunities for people who want to find work is absolutely there and will continue to be there."
If you're in college, Cobb suggests laying the groundwork for a career with a summer internship, because those who do both paid and non-paid internships have a higher chance a getting a job after they finish school or getting an offer with the company that they interned with.
