(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- 40% of workers with 401 (k) plans don't contribute to them. That's the conclusion of a recent survey.
The CNBC your money survey found that 4 out of 10 respondents with 401k plans don't contribute to them.
"Generally, I tell everyone to save at least 10% of your annual income and I think a lot of people get hung up on how to do this," said Elizabeth Buffardi, Founder of Crescendo Financial Planners in Oakbrook.
She tells the Noon Business Hour that one potential reason that people don't contribute to their 401 (k) plan is because they may not know to set up automatic contributions and in that case, they should speak to their HR department, who can help them set that up.
Buffardi said you should learn how to set up automatic contributions, because it will pay off down the line.
"Having that money come out of your paycheck is the easiest way to do it, because then you don't miss it-you don't see it and you can't miss what you don't already have."
