(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Before springing into a home repair, the Better Business Bureau is urging homeowners to do their research and avoid falling victim to some popular scams.

Temperatures are rising, which could mean more scammers coming to your door and offering their home improvement services.

“I’ve been doing this for 33 years,” Steve Bernas, President and CEO of the BBB of Chicago and Northern Illinois, said Tuesday.

“My biggest frustration is probably that consumers don’t do their due diligence or research on an organization before doing business with them.”

In some cases, Bernas said scammers will request cash up-front for a project that they never return to do.

“The Better Business Bureau also sees contractors who come to your house and are just bad businesses,” Bernas said. “They do shoddy work or they don’t have the proper permits.”

His tips include never paying in cash, always demanding a contract and researching companies before doing business with them.
