(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — An Oak Forest woman faces reckless homicide charges and failure to report an accident she allegedly drove over her husband following a trip on the Dan Ryan with him clinging to the roof.

When Haihua Cheng went to police Sunday night, Cook County prosecutors say, she only told officers about alleged physical abuse she suffered at the hands of her husband — but not that she had been driving earlier with him on top of his 2012 Nissan Rogue.

Prosecutors say the 27-year-old woman and 31-year-old John Gutierrez argued in Chinatown around 3:30 p.m., and she drove off after he got out of the car. He then jumped on and held on to the roof rails as she drove onto the Dan Ryan at Cermak, going about 55 mph, according to a witness.

That person says when Cheng exited at Garfield, Gutierrez jumped off and tried to get into the car but fell and Cheng drove over his head without stopping.

Her attorney tells the Chicago Sun-Times she had been abused by her husband and didn't know she had run over him. That’s why she didn't tell police about it when filing a domestic violence report that night, the attorney said.

A judge set a cash bond of $100,000 for Cheng, the Sun-Times reports.
