(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — A northern Indiana zoo is looking for a bobcat that escaped from its enclosure Wednesday morning.

Her name is Grace. She's 9 months old and about the size of a large house cat. The Washington Park Zoo says she escaped from her exhibit in Michigan City, Indiana.

Grace - along with her sister Hazel - have called the zoo home since December, but on Wednesday morning, the zoo staff realized Hazel was alone. The zoo does not know how Grace escaped.

“Like coyotes and foxes, bobcats are native to this area,” Zoo Director Jamie Huss said in a released statement.

“Due to her age and size, Grace will likely not be a threat to humans or most animals as long as she is left alone. Bobcats are quiet, secretive and active from dusk to night; and as with all wildlife, the natural response of a bobcat is to move away from humans.”

However, Grace’s prey would consist of chipmunks, rabbits and smaller animals.

The zoo has set out live traps and trail cameras in hopes of a sighting that will lead to capturing her.

The zoo reports that bobcats are active from dusk and into night. As with all wildlife, the natural response of a bobcat is to move away from humans.

Zoo officials are telling people to not try to catch her, but to report her to the Michigan City Police Department’s non-emergency phone number (219)-874-3221 since their phones are monitored 24/7.
