It was an emotionally charged day for Tomika Miller, the wife of Rayshard Brooks. The Fulton County DA’s office announced Wednesday that they are pressing charges on both officers involved in the shooting death of her husband. Following the announcement, Attorneys for the family of Rayshard Brooks held a press conference to address charges and the new video evidence reviewed by the DA. Garrett Rolfe, the officer who shot and killed Brooks, was charged with 11 counts and faces the death penalty or life without parole. Officer Devin Brosnan faces three charges, which could result in one to 20 years in prison.

During the press conference, L. Chris Stewart, attorney for the family, didn’t seem too impressed with the charges. Stewart’s response was, “We shouldn’t have to celebrate as African Americans when we get a piece of justice.” He explained by saying, “ Some people thought we would be happy and be celebrating and have a fist in the air, but It’s more of disappointment that this is the state of policing, this is we’re at.”
Attorney Justin Miller, who is also working on the case, shared his thoughts about the new video evidence that shows Officer Rolfe, kicking Brooks while he was on the ground after being shot by the officer. The video also shows Brosnan standing on the unarmed father of three’s shoulders while lying on the ground. Rayshard Brooks’ wife, Tomika Miller, was visibly emotional. While answering a question regarding her husband’s death, she began crying uncontrollably and walked away abruptly.
