AutoNSider Review | 2019 BMW X2 M35i

It’s possible that you actually could squeeze 29 or 30 MPG out of this new BMW, but you probably won’t.
Why?
It’s way too much fun to drive.
And hey…while good mileage is always appreciated, that’s not what you buy a BMW for, right?
You buy a BMW because you enjoy driving…and their X2 delivers. Especially in “M” trim, but even their price-leader mid-thirty-thousand X2 is a treat.
Dialing it up to “M” trim just adds sprinkles on top of the frosting on top of the cake.
In short, BMW’s X2 M35i is one of the more enjoyable city cars that I’ve driven.
That’s not to say that singles, couples, and families of up to four smaller children wouldn’t find the X2 to be an excellent road car, but in-town drivin’ is where the X2 M35 really shines.
Small enough to swing into tight parking spaces, and with enough power to just explode past the still-texting semi-mobile “traffic cones” that we all seem to still encounter.
While BMW calls their X2 a “Sports Activity Coupe”, I’d simply call it a hot hatch on steroids. It’s got four doors, a sloping roofline, and a rear hatchback. And in spite of its “2” designation, the X2 is actually just a little shorter and lower than its X1 cousin.
But in spite of its slightly smaller footprint, just flip open the hatch, drop one or two of the folding rear seats, and you’ve got a 54” long space…enough for fishing poles, skis, kayak paddles, or_______?
Now…we said that the “regular” X2 is a real treat to drive…and with its 30-ish window sticker, one might even call it a bit of a bargain.
But here’s what you’ll get when you add another ten thousand and dial your X2 to to “M” status: 301 HP vs the “regular” X2’s 228. That’s the most powerful 4-cylinder that BMW makes, and it’ll propel your X2 M35i to 60 in just over four-and-a-half seconds.
And of course, BMW sees to it that you’ve got brakes, suspension and tires to match that 300+ HP. And just call the M trim a pleasant extra.
In short, BMW’s relatively new X2 M35i gives you a bit of utility and a lotta’ sport…and delivers it in a well-dressed vehicle that doesn’t look like you’ve borrowed your parents’ car.
