But hey…I know…speed isn’t what usually puts an SUV on your radar.
But it sure is nice to have, isn’t it?
’26 marks the third year for Subie’s only all-electric vehicle. Two more are on the way for Spring ’26, but for the moment, the Solterra is Subaru’s “only child” electric.
And yes, it’s pretty fast. 0-60 in under 5 seconds and an almost pot-hole proof suspension make it a spirited yet comfortable drive.
But back to basics. The Solterra is a two-row AWD SUV. If you’re familiar with Subarus, the Solterra is roughly an inch longer and an inch wider than their Forrester. Roomy yet easily garage-able. And as the folks in the snow belts will appreciate, the Solterra gives you 8.3” of ground clearance…and room to use that above average ground clearance, with settings for snow, deep snow, dirt and mud.
Solterras come in five levels of trim, starting a hair under 40K and going up only to the mid $40’s. If you’ve been shopping for a new vehicle lately, you know that’s significantly less than the $50+ average that you’ll pay for new wheels today.
All five trim levels come with a new faster-charging 74.7 KWh lithium ion battery that can go from a 10% charge to 80% in around 28 minutes…about the time that it’ll take you to herd your crew to the restroom and stand in line to buy those drinks and chips. Range is up too for ’26…now up to 288 miles. And all models also come with a cell-phone-friendly digital key.
The bargain Solterra just might the their “Limited”..with it’s under $42,000 sticker. You get 20” alloys, Harman Kardon audio, heated front and outboard rear seats, heated steering, and 233 HP.
We tested the “Touring XT” version, tho’ For only $3,160 more, we enjoyed a beefier 338 HP motor, lower leg warmers to go with that heated seating, a panoramic glass sunroof, 360 degree vision, and ventilated faux suede-like cloth seats. Personally, I could do without the roof, but that 338 HP makes for a very sweet ride
With Subaru’s reputation for reliability plus the content, comfort and performance that the Solterra delivers for its under-market price makes this vehicle a very attractive choice if you’re looking to go all-electric.
