The Atlanta Falcons offense struggled against the New Orleans Saints defense for three quarters in a loss last Sunday before putting together a few drives.
What didn’t work in the first half that did in the final minutes? What was the difference? The biggest noticeable change was letting Matt Ryan go into an up-tempo, no-huddle offense.
Former Falcons WR and analyst Harry Douglas explains why the Falcons offense is better when it goes with tempo.
“They didn’t get it going until they started going tempo and no huddle and letting Matt Ryan call plays,” says Harry Douglas. Ryan has been his best when he’s in no-huddle, two-minute, orchestrating the offense, deciphering the defense and getting to the best plays the defense allows.
“Why not start the game like that? We used to start the game in no huddle and two-minute,” continues Harry Douglas. “When you go up-tempo it eliminates the pass rush and you don’t allow Dennis Allen to make the calls he wants to make at a fast tempo. Those two things slow a defense down and you allow Matt Ryan to make quick reads.”
