Voting rights advocates representing several groups staged a rally Tuesday outside the Governor's mansion in Atlanta.

Black Voters Matter and Protect the Vote GA joined other voting rights organizations in Georgia for a rally to stop the ban on outside election funding.

They are calling for Governor Brian Kemp to veto Senate Bill 222, which they call "a dangerous bill that threatens counties and elections staff with felony charges for applying for or accepting grants to support election administration."

The state's voting law passed in 2021 prohibits nonprofits from giving funding directly to local election officials. SB222 would expand the rule by setting a
fine starting at $10,000, with the felony punishable by a minimum one year in prison.

Calling the legislation "fair for everybody", republican lawmakers in Georgia advocated for the law expansion claiming that outside groups have "the ability to funnel money into a county for a specific party."

Governor Kemp has a 40-day window, which started at the end of the legislative session, to sign or veto the measure.
