Falcons leave more questions than answers as NFL Draft's biggest wildcard team

NFL Network Analyst Charles Davis explains why Falcons are wild card at eight

Now that the Atlanta Falcons have added so much talent in free agency, nobody knows what they are going to do in the draft.

National and local media, beat reporters, and draft analysts are now left scratching their heads when it comes to who the Falcons will draft with the number eight overall pick. Charles Davis of the NFL Network is no different, and he admitted as much to The Morning Shift earlier today when he said “We all have more questions about this draft than when we began.”

Defensive line help seemed like the obvious route going into free agency, but after adding David Onyemata, Calais Campell, and re-signing Lorenzo Carter everybody shifted to cornerback. However, the Falcons signed free agent corner Mike Hughes and traded for former number three overall pick Jeff Okudah. Now, it’s got Davis thinking the Falcons may throw in a monkey wrench at eight or possibly trade up.

“What if Bijan Robinson is sitting there and they decide to go running back?” Davis asked The Morning Shift. Terry Fontenot has addressed almost all of the Falcons needs in free agency, so even though the Falcons have used their first round pick on offensive players the last two drafts, a running back with generational talent could now be in play at eight.

“The only reason I throw the running back part in there is going back to the roots of Arthur Smith, what he did in Tennessee, what they did with Derrick Henry, how they run offense there…” Davis said. Now, while Bijan could be an option for the Falcons at eight, Charles also thinks a draft night trade could be in the cards for Atlanta as well.

Reports have surfaced that the Houston Texans could be shopping the second overall pick, and Davis doesn’t rule out the Falcons being a trade partner. “What if their phone is open and they make a move with someone and someone else comes up and gets a quarterback there at two. What if now, Atlanta is in play with someone that they like…” Davis said.

Charles wonders how the Falcons have this year’s quarterbacks ranked on their board, and if they would have any interest in Anthony Richardson or Will Levis at eight, but Charles said it best when he said “Who knows in this day and age?”.

It’s safe to say the Falcons are one of the true wild cards in this year’s draft, and while their pick a week from today could be predictable, Atlanta could also blindside the entire league next Thursday night.
