Why Darnell Mooney was MVP of Falcons' WR room

The Morning Shift explains why Darnell Mooney was MVP of the Falcons’ WR room in just his first year as a Falcon

Drake London and Darnell Mooney both had career years with the Atlanta Falcons this season. London finished his third season with 100 catches, 1,271 yards and nine touchdowns. If Mooney would’ve been able to play in the Falcons’ season finale against the Panthers it’s very likely he would’ve eclipsed 1,000 yards in a season for the first time in his career, but even still Mooney had a career year hauling in 64 receptions for 992 yards and five touchdowns.

Who is the 2024-25 MVP of the Falcons wide receiver room though? The Morning Shift gave their thoughts on that earlier today.

“What Darnell Mooney does for this team makes them way different than they have been in years past. Darnell Mooney’s speed, his ability to get deep on routes very quickly, and kind of not expose the safeties but stress the safeties, has allowed Drake London to do what Drake London needs to be doing in an NFL offense, so the numbers are Drake London’s, and you can point to that until we’re blue in the face and I’ll understand it, but the MVP for what he’s able to do is Darnell Mooney.” Mike Johnson said.

Beau Morgan disagreed with Mike Johnson and thinks Drake London is the Falcons’ WR room MVP because of his consistency throughout the year.

“I don’t disagree with the impact Darnell Mooney has had on this team, but for me if you’re talking about the receiving core as a whole it is Drake London because he has been the one consistent all year. You don’t catch 100 passes, you don’t have almost 1,300 yards, you don’t have nine touchdowns if you’re not the guy. When they needed a play this season, the game was on the line. Who did he go to seemingly more times than not? It was Drake London.” Beau said.

Both guys had career years and were obviously huge parts of the Falcons’ offense this season, and it seems like maybe they both opened up things for each other, but one thing is for certain this offense should be very dangerous next season with Michael Penix Jr., Drake London, Darnell Mooney, Bijan Robinson, and all the other weapons the Falcons have coming back on offense next season.
